Tethered Drone System

The tethered drone system was an interesting internship project I had worked on at Exponent Technology Services. The main goal of the project was to create a UAV system capable of operating continuously for long durations without needing to land to swap or charge batteries.

This was achieved by attaching a switch-mode power supply to the main power system of the UAV. Power was supplied through high gauge thin wires at a high voltage, allowing the current to be reduced following the conservation of power.

Once all calculations and tests for power consumption were performed, the system parameters were calculated and the appropriate components were procured and assembled.

The image on the below shows a working prototype which is operating at high voltage with power supplied by a generator on the ground. The flight test was conducted for a continuous 3 hours at an altitude of 15 meters.
